Charlie Bloe
Lead nurse for Cardiology, NHS Highland.
Charlie is a highly experienced cardiac nurse. He is based at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness and is the Lead Nurse for Cardiology for NHS Highland.
Charlie manages all cardiac services including CCU, all nurse specialists, cardiac rehab, Heart failure and Cath Lab. He is very active in workforce development, delivering CPD around core competencies, for his large team
Charlie is the current UK Cradiovascular Nurse of the Year. This award was in recognition of a project that has transformed communication and pre-hospital care between the coronary care unit and teams in the community.
Charlie has also established his own training company, Charles Bloe Training back in 1998, that was renowned for the delivery of expert face to face training courses. In 2019 Charlie stepped back from running this company, but he does still remain active as Clinical lead and head trainer within it.
Charlies has particular interest in 2 key areas of cardiology-
Embolic stroke prevention in AF and Early management of ACS
His work around embolic stroke prevention in AF won 1st place at the Thrombus 2012 awards
He has authored over 50 interactive educational programmes and published over 20 clinical papers

Claire Jones
Advanced Practitioner in Cardiac Rehabilitation – BCUHB East
After graduating as a Physiotherapist in 2007 and working in a rotational post for 3 years, I joined the Cardiac Rehabilitation in North East Wales in 2010. Here, I lead on the exercise component of Cardiac Rehab and completed my MSc Advanced Clinical Practice this year which included non-medical prescribing. I work as part of an innovative MDT which includes other Advanced Practitioners, and together we have developed our service to provide comprehensive optimisation of cardio-protective medications during cardiac rehab. This includes lipid-lowering therapy, and with the emergence of new evidence and guidance recommending new, lower targets of LDL cholesterol for high risk patients, ensuring timely and adequate optimisation of lipid-lowering therapy is crucial. In spite of this, research shows that attainment of lipid targets is generally poor. We developed a pathway to support this locally, and audit results suggest that the pathway has supported a significant improvement in the attainment of lipid targets.

I am a diabetes specialist nurse and the ThinkGlucose/diabetes nurse education lead for Swansea Bay University Hospital in South Wales. I work pan health board with the aim of making improvements across primary, community and secondary care. I have worked in General Practice running nurse led diabetes/CVD clinics; as a community diabetes specialist nurse; a clinical lead/lecturer in Education for Health in Warwick and as the ThinkGlucose lead and Diabetes Nurse Educator lead in Swansea Bay UHB.
Professor David Strain
University of Exeter Medical School, Exeter
Dr David Strain based in the Diabetes and Vascular Research Centre at the University of Exeter Medical School.
His main focus is the health of older adults with diabetes; ensuring the right patient gets the right treatment. He has performed the only study to date demonstrating the feasibility of individualizing targets for older adults across Europe. This has informed the new UK guidance document for the management of older adults with diabetes and Frailty, of which he was lead author.
Additionally, he has performed a global project exploring the causes of clinical inertia in diabetes in conjunction with the IDF called ‘Time 2 Do More in Diabetes’. As a result he has initiated several projects in the UK across primary and secondary care aiming to reduce this phenomenon
Eileen Munson
Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Senior Lecturer
Eileen Munson is a Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Senior Lecturer who has specialised in the Menopause and runs Menopause Empowerment education along with undertaking private menopause consultations.
She has an advanced diploma in the menopause from Warwick University and a diploma from the Royal Collage of Nursing. Previously she worked as a menopause specialist educating Doctors, nurses, and hospital gynaecology teams here within Wales prior to taking up her post at the University of South Wales.
Eileen was part of the team who produced the NICE guidance on Contraception for the over 40’s. She has published widely on the menopause in Journal of General Practice Nursing, The Journal of Nurse Prescribing and Practice Nursing Journal.
Gill Pulford
Locality Diabetes Specialist Nurse
Following 10 years in Practice Nursing, Gill became a Diabetes Specialist Nurse at Ysbyty Gwynedd hospital, working in clinic situations both in the hospital and the surrounding Community.
With a special interest in diet and lifestyle Gill trained to deliver X-Pert courses in both weight management and diabetes.
After five years at Ysbyty Gwynedd Gill is now in post as the Locality Diabetes Specialist Nurse for Conwy East
Heather Daly
Independent Diabetes Nurse – Reach Health
Heather Daly is well known in the field of diabetes with a career spanning nearly 40 years, culminating in the senior position of Nurse Consultant in diabetes research. Previously Based in the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC), Heather led a senior team specialising in developing and testing patient education programmes and healthcare professional training. She continues to contribute to the professional development of healthcare professionals locally, throughout the UK and internationally and until 2016 was deputy director of the MSc in Diabetes postgraduate programme at the University of Leicester.
Heather left this position in 2016 to work independently as a nurse consultant and establish her own company.
She has an established research portfolio for complex interventions in all aspects of diabetes care, prevention and its associated conditions.
In 2012 she was instrumental in the transformation and redesign of diabetes services across Leicestershire and Rutland, developing the patient pathway and describing the models required for effective structure patient education.
In 2012 she was awarded the QIC (quality in care) Diabetes outstanding educator in diabetes award and more the named Janet Kinson lecture which was delivered at the 2014 Diabetes UK annual conference in recognition of her contribution to diabetes care
Between December 2013 and March 2017 Heather was awarded the title of Visiting Professor with the University of Leicester.
She continues to work in the field of diabetes, clinically, educationally and within research, service development and evaluation. She is passionate about structured education to support self-management, empowerment and person centred care. Heather continues to work clinically as a diabetes specialist nurse in a primary care practice. and one of the projects she is currently working on in Northern Ireland is to make insulin treatment in hospitals safer.
Her passion for the continued professional development of nurses in the field of diabetes resulted in the development and delivery of a national “Tomorrows leaders” programme with Diabetes UK for nurses and dietitians.
Heather is in the process of piloting a Diabetes Nurses blended learning interventions to extend the specialist nurses skills in facilitation, coaching and mentoring to support non diabetes specialists deliver high standards of diabetes care.
Julie Lewis
Nurse Consultant & Clinical Lead for Diabetes
I have worked in diabetes services since 2002. During this time, I have been fortunate to gain clinical, academic and leadership experience in a wide range of settings both in North Wales and more widely. Firstly, as a Researcher, a DSN, then Clinical Lead for diabetes in my health board. I completed my DAFNE educator training and enjoyed peer reviewing new educators across the UK for many years.
I returned as a full time consultant clinical practitioner in 2018. Working in Primary Care and dedicating this period in my career to embed consultant specialist expertise for diabetes and associated cardio-vascular, renal and metabolic conditions into a general practice environment.
During 2022 I resumed my diabetes clinical lead role for BCUHB. I continue to practice in primary care and am currently running a long-term condition hub transformation project. I hold an all-Wales secondment post with the NHS Executive to contribute to the Public Health Wales (PHW) Tackling Diabetes Together work, and as diabetes lead nurse for Wales. It is in these latter roles, that I can represent our diabetes nursing community, and ensure that Nursing has a strong voice in the creation of services for diabetes in Wales through PHW and the National Strategic Network for diabetes. This Network will endeavour to influence the delivery of high standards of diabetes care that are sustainable and more equitable across Wales.
I represent Wales Diabetes Nursing on various national committees and am a founder member of WAND, the Welsh Academy for Nursing in Diabetes. WAND offer an annual professional conference that is supported by the Office of the Chief Nurse in Wales, a range of competency training measures and online education resources for diabetes nursing, and support for post graduate academic study.
I have a particular interest in creating service transformation models that tackle variation, and health professional education. I hold an honorary contract as senior clinical tutor for the Swansea University diabetes practice MSc. I was elected to the UK Primary Care Diabetes Society (PCDS) committee in Nov. 2020 and have thoroughly enjoyed programme planning and presenting for the Wales and National PCDS conferences.
Karen Frankland
Primary Care Respiratory Nurse Specialist and Trainer
My interest in respiratory care began as a practice nurse in Trafford, Manchester, many years ago!
I am now a primary care respiratory nurse specialist and qualified teacher with a wide range of experience within the N.H.S., occupational health, research and the pharmaceutical industry. I have been involved in education, which is my passion! for approximately 15 years.
I am particularly interested in contemporary diagnostic and management technologies for inflammatory asthma including the application and accurate use of FeNO testing.

Lucy Partington-Smith
Highly Qualified Specialist Nurse and Nurse Prescriber
Lucy Partington-Smith, Director and founder of Eden holistic practitioners is a highly qualified Specialist Nurse and nurse prescriber in Neurology and Neurosurgery, she has worked within this area of speciality for over 13 years and has been a qualified nurse within the public sector for 18 years.
In additional she has accreditation in the Principles and Practice of the menopause via the British Menopause society and has completed the confidence in the menopause course via the Louise Newson not- for- profit organisation.
Lucy has extensive knowledge of advanced therapies used as potential Neurological Movement disorder treatments such as Apomorphine and Deep Brain Stimulation ( DBS).
Lucy has been involved with research projects and academic papers in and around the subject of movement disorders and has held previously the presidency position of the DBSNA (deep brain stimulation nurse association) For a total of five years until deciding she needed a better work/ life balance.
Lucy within the NHS field, has worked collaboratively with pharmaceutical company’s, device company’s, therapists, primary and tertiary care colleagues and patients to achieve the best possible care outcome for her patients.
Alongside this Lucy is a qualified Naturopathic advisor. With a long, vested and keen interest in holistic health. Lucy is always focused on looking at the individual as a whole picture, to ensure the best advice and guidance is offered.
Lucy gained her reiki master status over a decade ago and is a qualified meditation instructor.
Above all, Lucy feels very passionately about people and their right to true holistic wellness, support and care.
Professor Marc Evans
Consultant Diabetologist
Dr Evans is a Consultant Diabetologist at the University Hospital of Llandough in Cardiff, where he has been in post since 2003. He has a very active research interest, particularly in the fields of health economics, health outcomes, epidemiology and pharmacoepidemiology. He has published over 200 peer reviewed papers and abstracts across these fields and has also supported various HTA submissions for differing novel therapies across a variety of disease areas. He is currently editor in chief of Diabetes therapy, a journal specifically focused on therapeutic issues in diabetes.

Dr Nicola Mullin
Consultant in Sexual and Reproductive Health
Based in Chester, Nicola is the Clinical Lead for the Integrated Sexual Health service across West Cheshire which is part of Virgin Care. Nicky completed her training in general obstetrics and gynaecology in Mersey Region before specialising in community sexual and reproductive health. Her role involves all aspects of complex contraception, level 3 STI care, menopause, PMS and psychosexual medicine, and vasectomy. Her service is the regional referral centre for deep and impalpable implant removals. Nicky is faculty registered trainer and has strong links with primary care, school nurses and public health. In her spare time, she is a forensic doctor at the Liverpool sexual assault referral centre and a brownie and guide leader.
Rob Gingell
Familial Hypercholesterolaemia specialist nurse for North Wales
Rob has been in post since the launch of the All Wales FH Service in 2010.
Rob has worked as a cardiology nurse since qualifying in 2000 and has gained MSc Advanced Clinical Nursing Practitioner + Post Graduate Certificate in Genetic Health Care qualifications. He has received National Awards within his field of practice, and earlier this year awarded an honorary senior lecturer title from Bangor University.
Dr Sarah Davies
GP Cardiff – Special Interest, Diabetes
Sarah is a GP in Cardiff with a special interest in diabetes. She is the All Wales lead for diabetes in primary care and Clinical Director for Diabetes in primary care for Cardiff and Vale UHB. She is a Diabetes UK Clinical Champion, Primary Care Diabetes Society committee member and a presenter for NB Medical Hot Topics, leading their diabetes course.
Dr Stephanie Gallard
GPwSI in Dermatology
Dr Stephanie Gallard is a GPwSI in Dermatology and a non-consultant member of the British Association of Dermatologists, and finds dermatology absolutely fascinating. She is also a registered pharmacist who remains on the register, which is incredibly useful and a very rare combination to find.
Stephanie has worked in dermatology for over 18 years and lectures in Dermatology for the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospital Trust for many years. She has a strong belief in quality, accessible dermatology education, especially for primary care clinicians, and lectures on the subject regularly to a variety of audiences for a variety of organisations, including the RCGP. Her lectures are very well received and she is a dynamic speaker. She works across several practices on the Wirral and in Liverpool.
Tracey Kirk
Director of Education at the Primary Care Respiratory Training Centre and the Primary Care Diabetes Training Centre.
Tracy has been involved in Practice Nurse education since 2002 starting out as a tutor for the Practice Nurse Specialist Practitioner BSc Course at Manchester University before moving on to specialise in respiratory disease education. She has also worked as an assessor for the RCN Nurse Education Accreditation Unit.
Tracy was a Primary Care based respiratory nurse consultant for 18 years working on large scale Primary Care based Asthma, COPD and Diabetes projects across the UK and draws upon her vast experience within real-life general practice to develop the content of all the PCRTC/PCDTC programmes of learning.
Tracy is also a national speaker on asthma, COPD, spirometry and type 2 diabetes and has peer reviewed published articles on COPD.
Dr Yee-ping Teoh
Consultant Chemical Pathologist and Clinical Lead for Biochemistry at the Wrexham Maelor Hospital, North Wales, UK since 2008.
Dr Teoh did her initial undergraduate medical training in Melbourne, Australia before continuing her postgraduate training in UK since 1997. Dr Teoh was accepted to the West of Scotland Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine Specialist Registrar training in Glasgow from 2002-2008 and was involved with a few statin clinical trials with Prof Jim Shepherd who was the Lead investigator for WOSCOPS and PROSPER trials. She was appointed into her current post as Consultant Chemical Pathologist in Wrexham since 2008. As there were no Lipid clinics in North Wales, Dr Teoh started the first Lipid clinic in Nov 2008 and to date, there is now a lipid clinic in each of the 3 hospitals in BCUHB. Together with her Familial Hypercholesterolaemia (FH) nurse specialist Rob Gingell, they have been managing high risks FH patients in the region since 2010.
