The second in a series of three one-hour Lunch & Learn sessions designed for nurses working in general practice, focusing on contemporary diabetes care beyond glycaemic control.

Session 2 GLP-1 Receptor Agonists: Beyond Glycaemic Control

Session overview/content:
This session focuses on GLP-1 receptor agonists and their benefits beyond HbA1c reduction,
particularly in relation to cardiovascular risk reduction and weight management. The session
will support nurses in understanding the place of GLP-1 RAs in current diabetes care,
addressing common patient questions and misconceptions, and recognising practical issues
relevant to primary care nursing reviews.

Aim:
To support primary care nurses in understanding the broader cardiometabolic benefits of GLP1 receptor agonists and their role in holistic diabetes management.

Learning objectives:
By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Outline the mechanism of action of GLP-1 receptor agonists beyond glycaemic control
  • Describe the cardiovascular benefits associated with GLP-1 receptor agonist therapy
  • Understand the impact of GLP-1 receptor agonists on weight and appetite regulation
  • Identify patients who may benefit most from GLP-1 receptor agonist treatment
  • Address common patient concerns and questions related to injections, side effects,
    and long-term use
